Upon Gideon and Athena’s arrival at the construction site, Carlos and his team approached them with friendly smiles.
Carlos couldn’t help but remark, “Even with the mess here at the site, you still decided to come in person!”
Athena responded casually, “Given the incident that occurred, it only made sense to inspect the site.”
Carlos nodded in agreement and said, “You see, there are always tensions between the locals and us. I was worried it might put both of you in harm’s way.”
Athena listened without comment.
With a wry smile, Gideon added, “Well, if there’s a conflict, it’s just unfortunate for the villagers.”
Carlos looked surprised and asked, “What do you mean?”
Gideon’s smile widened as he spoke, “If they’re just after money, they’ll be sorely disappointed. But if they dare to harm Athena and me, they’ll be getting a pair of silver handcuffs each.”
Carlos struggled to maintain his smile, concern starting to show on his face. “I’m just concerned, that’s all.”
Gideon nodded in response.
They proceeded to the conference room at the site.
Upon opening the door, they were greeted with an unexpected sight: over ten locals were seated in the conference room. Judging by their attire, it was clear they were villagers.
As they entered, the people in the room turned their attention toward them. The group clapped the table without saying a word.
“So you’re the ones in charge of this company? Shame on you for even considering disturbing our ancestral tomb! Today, I’ll fight you tooth and nail!” A man rolled up his sleeves, poised to charge forward.
Seeing this, Carlos hurriedly stepped in, trying to intervene and discourage a physical confrontation.
The man seemed surprised that neither the well-dressed gentleman nor the seemingly delicate female secretary were responding to physical threats.
“Hey, calm down! Mr. Hale and Miss Newton flew all the way from Girard City to address your concerns!” Carlos guided the man back to his seat.
Unyielding, the man exclaimed, “There’s no room for discussion. You need to find a way around it. Avoid it!”
“Avoid it?” Athena took a seat and replied nonchalantly, “Well, it’s not entirely impossible.”
Her statement sparked a flurry of protest from Carlos and his team. “Miss Newton, we’re deep into the second phase of the project. How could we possibly avoid it?”
Another team member chimed in, “Absolutely. Do you have any idea how much the cost would skyrocket if we tried that?”
Yet another added, “Mr. Hale, do you agree with this approach?”
Of course, Gideon had no intention of considering that option. Going around would likely cost several billion dollars more.
Athena’s response took them by surprise. “I haven’t finished speaking. Why are you all in such a rush?” She looked kindly at the villagers. “You heard it yourselves. If we were to go around, it would result in significant losses for our company. So, if you’re willing to cover those losses, we can certainly find a way around.”
Gideon almost burst into laughter.
Clearly, this group was attempting to blackmail them.
Instead of backing down, Athena turned the tables and confronted them directly.
Carlos and the group were thoroughly bewildered.
“You think you can deceive me, you despicable woman? We’re here to get compensation from you! And now you dare to ask for money from us?”
In his desperation, the man unwittingly revealed their true intentions.
Carlos’s expression turned grim as their plan unraveled. They had intended to use villagers who were willing to risk it all to unsettle the executives from Girard City. The goal was to create chaos and disrupt the management before dramatically raising the price. Unfortunately, things were taking a different turn.
“Three years ago, our company obtained legal rights to this entire land, including the area where your ancestral tombs are. We’ve followed all the required procedures,” Athena explained calmly. “Out of goodwill, we’ll leave the ancestral tombs untouched. However, we ask that you buy the tombs and compensate us for our losses. Is this unreasonable?”
She smiled as she continued, “We can’t spend money to be filial to you, can we?”
