Byron’s expression involuntarily turned into a frown, catching Heather’s attention.

Quickly, Heather reassured, “I didn’t mean anything negative!”

Curious, Byron inquired, though his tone and demeanor lacked warmth, “What do you want to discuss?”

“Noticed how concerned you were about Miss Newton when she got hurt that day? You seemed quite restless afterward,” Heather said with a helpless smile, seemingly unperturbed.

“Admittedly, she holds a significant place in my life,” Byron stated bluntly, cutting to the chase. “Miss Rose, I have no intentions of impeding your future relationships, so…”

“Meaning even if we were to get married, you’d still maintain ties with her, correct?” Heather interjected, picking up on the thread.

“Yes,” Byron affirmed.

Heather grasped the situation.

“You’re quite forthright,” she noted.

“That’s right,” Byron concurred. “Very well.”

Heather nodded, “It’s good to lay this out beforehand. I also don’t want our marriage to become a restraint. We can focus on our own affairs from now on. However, in public and for our parents, we should act like a devoted couple. Agreed?”

“Of course,” Byron promptly responded.

“Let’s formalize our engagement as soon as possible. The sooner we do, the sooner we can put this matter to rest.”

“Agreed.”

Taking a sip of water, Heather settled back onto the bed.

Byron’s spirits lifted. With his conversation with Heather cleared up, he felt things would proceed smoothly.

Relaxing on the sofa, Byron eagerly reached for his phone to message Athena.

“Finish your work and come back,” he typed.

It was nearly 1 o’clock in the morning.

Byron didn’t expect an immediate response from Athena.

Browsing Instagram, he noticed Athena had switched her account to private.

Byron was puzzled.

Unbeknownst to him, it was due to his liking of her posts.

Meanwhile, his colleagues at the President’s Office were enjoying a night out in the club since Byron wasn’t present.

Their revelry was cut short when one spotted an Instagram notification and checked it.

Seeing Byron’s like on Athena’s post sobered them.

They promptly called Athena, who had been asleep.

Startled by the ringing, Athena answered.

Before she could speak, a horrified voice came from the other end, “Miss Newton, Mr. Crawford liked your post! Didn’t you block him?”

Athena was now wide awake.

She had indeed switched to a private account.

Athena then opened Byron’s message asking about her return.

Gazing at the message for a moment, Athena navigated to her Instagram posts.

She scrolled to the set of nine pictures.

Late at night, a surge of emotions, tied to memories of the past, overwhelmed Athena in the darkness.

This was the day Romy was cremated.

Athena was consumed by helplessness and fear for what lay ahead.

Like a drowning person, she grasped for something to hold onto.

So she had posted on Instagram.

This was the only time Athena had crossed a line during her five years by Byron’s side.

She waited for Byron’s response all through that day and night, even up until Romy’s burial.

To her relief, she received no response.

From that point on, Athena ceased to expect anything from Byron. She had come to terms with it.
