Chapter – 27

Dreaming About Romy

As Byron held Athena, he sensed that everything had changed drastically.

“Mr. Crawford,” Athena began to speak.

Pausing for a moment, she didn’t resist his embrace.

She was utterly exhausted.

“Hmm…” Byron mumbled into her neck, his response gentle.

Athena felt as if her heart was being torn apart by something.

“I’m weary. All I desire is a tranquil and ordinary life. Please, release me,” she implored.

Her request wasn’t delivered through angry or hysterical shouts.

It was a calm and measured appeal.

Subconsciously, Byron’s grip on Athena’s waist tightened.

“I’m not Freya,” Athena insisted. “The appearances you admire were all a facade. But now, I’m drained. I no longer wish to stand in for Freya. I want to be myself.”

“Enough talking. Don’t you need rest?” Byron said.

With one hand, he gently covered Athena’s mouth.

“Sleep,” he instructed.

Athena was unsure of Byron’s thoughts.

He didn’t love her, and now he had a new replacement for her. So why was he still pursuing her?

Had she performed too convincingly in the past?

Athena chuckled at her own musings.

After a while, she drifted off to sleep, perhaps into a slumber that was too deep, or maybe due to the effect of the death threat. In her sleep, she experienced something like a nightmare.

It wasn’t exactly a nightmare.

In the dream, she was transported back to the day of her grandmother Romy’s cremation.

A handful of neighbors were present.

Athena was dressed in a black attire.

When Romy had passed away, Athena hadn’t felt an overwhelming amount of grief.

She hadn’t even shed a tear.

During those years, Romy had endured immense suffering due to illness.

They had spent considerable resources on Romy’s treatment, but it only prolonged her agony.

Athena had thought that Romy was finally at peace.

However, as Romy was about to be taken into the incinerator, Athena was suddenly engulfed by an intense sense of pain.

Terrified, she wanted to reclaim Romy.

Neighbors wept and held her back. Athena knelt outside, consumed by fear.

“Grandma…

“Grandma…

“Grandma!” Athena’s cries echoed.

“Thea…”

In her ears, there was a familiar voice.

She abruptly awoke.

“Did you have a nightmare?” Byron’s face gradually came into focus before her eyes.

Athena’s breathing hadn’t yet steadied.

She gasped for air.

Her gaze slowly sharpened.

“Are you alright?” Byron showed concern and used his fingertips to gently wipe away the tears at the corners of her eyes.

Athena turned her gaze away and shook her head. “I’m fine.”

As Byron was about to say something, the doorbell rang.

Athena nudged Byron and urged, “Move aside.”

Byron resisted and pushed her back. “Who is it? Your boyfriend?”

Athena was rendered speechless.

The doorbell persisted, growing increasingly irritating.

“Byron…” Athena started, but before she could continue, Byron lowered his head and bit her neck.

“You’re insane!” Athena pushed him away.

She managed to push him off with ease.

“Go answer the door now,” Byron ordered.

Athena used her long hair to conceal the mark on her neck, then slipped out of the bed from the opposite side.

She opened the door.

As expected, it was Gabe, appearing anxious.

“Athena, were you sleeping? I couldn’t reach you, and you took so long to open the door. I was worried sick!” Gabe breathed a sigh of relief. “I’m glad you’re okay. I was even considering calling the police!”

“I had fallen asleep. Why are you here?” Athena inquired.

“Look at the time. It’s dinner time!” Gabe’s eyes were filled with affection. “You barely ate at lunch. You’re not a fan of meat, right? Let’s have a vegetable-focused meal tonight.”

Before Athena could respond, Gabe’s gaze shifted behind her.
