Chapter – 37
As Athena logged out of her Instagram, a notification chimed on her phone. Byron’s message popped up: [?]
Athena had no intention of responding to his message.
In response, Byron chose to call her immediately.
Growing increasingly restless, the entitled young master was frustrated that he couldn’t access her Instagram.
Athena deliberately ignored his call, contemplating her next move. Eventually, she concluded that it might be best to pacify him for the time being, given her imminent departure.
Reluctantly, she answered the call.
She questioned, “Mr. Crawford, do you realize what time it is?”
Byron shot back, “What’s with your Instagram? Why did you make it private?”
“I changed it deliberately,” Athena replied, lying down as drowsiness overcame her. “Please, end the call. I’m exhausted.”
Mockingly, he retorted, “So, you were exhausted but somehow found the energy to adjust your Instagram?”
Athena replied simply with a casual “Yeah.”
The soft “Yeah” grazed Byron’s heart like the gentle touch of a kitten’s tail, leaving a tingling sensation. He absentmindedly ran his tongue across his lips.
Athena inquired, “How is Miss Ross doing?”
Byron responded, “She’s fine.”
“That’s a relief. Otherwise, I’d have felt so guilty…” Athena’s sleepiness seemed to loosen her tongue as she spoke candidly.
Byron’s heart constricted at her words. He frowned and quickly interjected, “Don’t say that. It’s not your fault.”
Athena didn’t reply.
Byron could sense her breathing gradually calming down.
Since Athena had brought up the idea of breaking up, Byron had been agitated daily and had even lost his appetite. That was until yesterday when he held her in his arms, feeling her gentle breath, warmth, and heartbeat. In that moment, all the negativity seemed to dissolve, like a lost soul finding its way back home.
Listening to Athena’s steady breath over the phone, Byron found it hard to hang up.
The next morning, Athena awoke to realize that the call was still ongoing. She reacted quickly, struck by the realization that her phone’s battery hadn’t died after such a long night call.
Her next thought was that Byron had completely lost his mind.
“Are you awake?” Byron’s voice sounded through the phone.
She was about to reply when she heard a soft voice, slightly muffled from Byron’s end, asking, “Byron, what do you want for breakfast?”
Athena’s body went rigid.
In a reflexive move, she abruptly ended the call, and without wasting a second, she added Byron’s number to her blocked contacts list.
Everything was dealt with swiftly.
Clutching her phone, Athena wore a look of disbelief.
Under her breath, she muttered incredulously, “Byron is not only insufferable, but he also has these repugnant fetishes?”
Athena recalled the events of last night. He was on the phone with her while possibly being with Heather simultaneously.
The thought turned her stomach, and she rushed to the bathroom to vomit.
After emptying her stomach, Athena noticed several unread WhatsApp messages from Byron.
Byron messaged: [Did you block my number?]
[Unblock my number right now!]
[Athena, you’re getting bolder by the day!]
Athena would have blocked Byron on WhatsApp if not for work-related concerns.
Ignoring his messages, she got dressed, picked up her laptop bag, and headed downstairs.
A black business car was waiting at the hotel’s ground level. Seeing Athena, the chauffeur stepped out, opening the car door for her.
Gideon, clad in a sharp suit, sat inside with his legs crossed. He greeted her casually, “Good morning, Miss Newton.”
“Morning,” Athena replied curtly and entered the car, her demeanor cooler than usual.
Gideon sensed her mood and didn’t push further. Putting on an eye mask, he settled into a nap as the car began to move.
Having arrived at their destination, Gideon hadn’t slept well due to the unfamiliar surroundings.
Athena paid him no attention, engrossed in her email exchanges with someone.
