Chapter – 47
Whatever Gideon’s motives were, Athena felt a deep sense of gratitude towards him. Her role as Byron’s secretary had often overshadowed her accomplishments, causing her to be denied recognition despite her hard work.
Being praised by Gideon was refreshing and heartwarming. The food in the canteen, usually mundane, now tasted surprisingly flavorful.
After lunch, Athena was planning to head back to downtown.
“Most of the matters have been resolved. Mr. Hale, I trust you’ll handle the follow-up work effectively,” Athena commented with her usual professional demeanor.
“Are you returning directly to Girard City?” Gideon inquired.
“Yes, tonight’s flight,” Athena replied.
But what was the hurry? Who was she planning to meet upon her return?
“Miss Newton, I hope you’ll consider the advice I offered you yesterday,” Gideon voiced his thoughts once again.
Athena merely glanced at him without further explanation. She was cautious, fearing Gideon might disclose their conversation to Byron. Such an act could jeopardize her departure.
“Alright,” she responded dismissively, reaching for the car door.
Seeing her gesture, Gideon quickly opened the car door for her.
“I genuinely meant to invite you to dinner when I return to Girard City. It’s not just an empty promise,” Gideon asserted earnestly, holding the car door.
“Mr. Hale, it’s not necessary. Resolving this was my duty,” Athena paused and added, “If Mr. Crawford were aware that I had personal interactions with you, he wouldn’t be pleased.”
For a moment, Gideon hesitated. Athena then closed the car door, and the business car drove away, leaving Gideon standing amidst swirling dust. He waved his hand in front of his eyes to clear it.
Soon after, he received a call from Byron.
Gideon glanced at the caller ID and answered the call impassively.
“I heard things were resolved over there, correct?” Byron inquired.
On the other end of the line, Lola’s voice could be faintly heard as she said, “We’ve informed the media, and an official press release will be issued tomorrow.”
“So you’re announcing your engagement to the public so soon?” Gideon responded with a question of his own.
“Heather and I both feel that going through the formalities promptly would prevent us from interfering with each other’s work plans,” Byron explained. Then he asked, “Where’s Athena?”
Gideon didn’t answer the question directly.
Instead, he addressed an issue that had been on his mind. “Byron, I think you should stop pressuring Athena.”
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line, as if Byron was taken aback.
“Since we’re discussing this,” Gideon continued with determination, “Athena told you about her mother, right? How she died because of her father’s mistress. Athena has chosen to stay out of relationships and marriages because of that painful experience. Now that you’re about to announce your engagement, it’s best to let her go.”
“Gideon,” Byron’s voice was cold and commanding.
“You’ve crossed a line.”
Gideon shivered at the icy tone, but he pressed on. “Since we’re on this topic, I might as well make myself clear. Athena is deeply scarred by her past, and I believe you shouldn’t force her into something she’s not comfortable with. You shouldn’t make her suffer.”
“Enough,” Byron retorted with a hint of disdain. “Gideon, why are you so invested in Athena’s affairs? It’s starting to make me wonder if you have ulterior motives.”
