You Are Heartless

Byron avoided responding and changed the subject.

“Why is Gabe here?” he inquired.

“None of your business!” Athena’s irritation grew, and she snapped, “Mr. Crawford, what’s gotten into you? Haven’t we made ourselves clear? If you keep pestering me like this, aren’t you worried I might mistakenly think you’re falling for me?”

“Are you insane?” Byron’s reaction was intense.

He gripped Athena’s chin firmly.

He spoke, “Athena, we agreed that if I got married, you could leave, but I’m not married yet, so this arrangement still stands.”

Athena stared at Byron as if she’d been struck by lightning.

“Byron, what on earth are you saying?” Her eyes filled with resentment, and she continued, “I’ve given my all to you for the past five years. Even if you don’t care for me, you can’t treat me like this. You’re utterly heartless!”

For a moment, Byron was taken aback.

“Do you think your spending implies ownership?” Athena’s agitation grew, “I’ll return everything you’ve given me. Can you please just let me go?”

“No!” Byron’s response was panicked.

He wasn’t entirely sure why he felt this way.

He just instinctively refused Athena’s request.

“Byron!” Athena’s shout was sharp.

Suddenly, a wave of nausea washed over her.

She pushed him away and rushed to the bathroom. Locking the door behind her, she hunched over the toilet and vomited.

Afterwards, she felt utterly drained.

Sitting on the bathroom floor, she cradled her belly.

It seemed the baby didn’t take kindly to its father.

All the intense reactions lately seemed to be triggered by Byron.

Outside the bathroom, Byron’s realization came after a pause.

He stood up and walked to the bathroom, inadvertently knocking into Athena’s bag.

The bag fell to the ground, spilling its contents.

Byron’s gaze fell on some packaged medicine boxes.

He intended to pick them up, but his attention was caught by a piece of paper with bold, crimson writing.

Picking it up, he read every word.

His expression grew cold once more.

He gleaned two things from the note. One was that someone was threatening Athena’s life, and the other was the mention of her boyfriend.

After a while, Athena regained her composure and stepped out of the bathroom.

Seeing her scattered belongings, panic swept over her.

Those medicines…

Athena hurriedly knelt, gathering her things and stuffing them back into her bag.

“What’s this?” Byron asked, handing her the paper.

“A death threat,” Athena replied as she shouldered her bag and walked into the bedroom.

Byron followed closely.

Before he could inquire further, Athena spoke, “Mr. Crawford, Mr. Hale is well aware of the situation. You can ask him for details. I’m not feeling well, and I need to rest.”

Athena’s face was pale, and her eyes were red from vomiting.

Though Byron was furious about the term “boyfriend,” he couldn’t reveal it.

Athena ignored him.

She removed her coat, lifted a corner of the blanket, and curled up inside.

After a while, she sensed the bed behind her sinking under a familiar weight.

The comforting breath enveloped her once again.

Byron embraced her from behind, and all his anger melted away.
