Chapter – 31

Heather’s Car Crash

Heather had been in a car accident.

No one was outside; Gabe had already departed.

Byron felt quite content about this. He unconsciously glanced at Athena.

Walking ahead, Athena’s gaze was cast downward, her expression indifferent, void of any extra emotions.

“I thought he’d be more resolute,” Byron taunted.

Athena paid him no heed.

Both proceeded to the elevator, one after the other.

At that moment, Byron’s phone rang.

Glancing down, his expression visibly grew colder.

It was Lola calling.

He disconnected without hesitation.

As the elevator doors opened, two children rushed in, colliding with Athena.

Reacting swiftly, Byron enfolded her in his arms to shield her.

“Apologies! They didn’t mean it!” The children’s parents immediately apologized.

Byron’s countenance remained grim.

The two young boys swiftly added their apologies.

Athena appeared gentle. “Be more cautious next time. If you hurt someone, your parents will be in big trouble!”

“We understand.”

The youngsters mumbled their responses.

The parents departed after repeated apologies and admonitions to their children.

“Alright, you can let go now.”

Byron didn’t realize his grip until she spoke.

But since she brought it up…

Byron tightened his hold even more. “I’m not releasing you.”

Athena was left speechless.

What on earth was happening?

Previously, he wouldn’t have displayed such intimacy in public, not even in front of Gideon, who was aware of their relationship.

Now that they were no longer together, he seemed to be acting in this manner.

Could he really be unhappy about their breakup?

Holding Athena, Byron guided her into the elevator. “Gideon is still waiting. Let’s move.”

He seemed to be in good spirits.

However, Athena felt awkward. “Mr. Crawford, there are surveillance cameras here…”

“So?” he retorted.

“I recall you saying that I should avoid you whenever there’s a camera,” Athena challenged, giving him a stern look.

Byron frowned.

He had indeed uttered those words, and that was the right approach.

Suddenly, Athena’s phone rang.

It was Lola calling.

All the emotions stirred by Byron were instantaneously stilled.

“Who’s calling?” Byron inquired with a frown. Athena answered and stated, “It’s your mother.”

Byron wanted to intervene, but he was too late.

“Mrs. Lola Crawford,” Athena spoke politely yet distantly.

“Pass the phone to Byron. I know you’re together,” Lola’s tone was so brusque it seemed to consume Athena.

“Alright.”

Athena handed over the phone to Byron without meeting his gaze.

Lola’s tone made her feel an acute sense of shame. It was akin to being stripped bare and tossed onto the street.

Byron took the call.

“Mom…”

“Miss Ross was in a car accident. Get your ass back here!”

“Car accident?” Byron released his grip on Athena’s waist.

The elevator reached the ground floor just then.

Athena let out a soft exhale and stepped out of the elevator. She stood by its entrance, waiting for Byron to exit and return her phone.

After a moment, she heard Byron say, “I’ll be right back.”

Athena’s lips curled upwards.

Her exact emotions eluded her.

Stepping out of the elevator, Byron’s mood seemed slightly subdued.

“Leave the project to Gideon. You need to return to Girard City with me.”

Athena reached out to retrieve her phone.

Then she lifted her gaze to meet Byron’s eyes, which were clear, devoid of impurities.

“No, I won’t.”

She began withdrawing her hand, but it was caught by Byron.

“You’ve received death threats!”
