A Threat of Death
“We’re at full capacity now. Let’s head back,” she suggested to Gabe, offering him an option to back out.
Right after she spoke, Athena was about to step forward, but Gabe suddenly gripped her arm, catching her off guard.
Athena was surprised by his action and glanced sideways at Gabe.
“Let’s forget the past,” Gabe said earnestly, “What I’m interested in is our future together.”
Athena was taken aback by his words. She pulled her arm away abruptly.
“Gabe, you need to think clearly. I’m not meant for you,” she asserted.
“Why wouldn’t you be? I believe we’re a perfect match,” Gabe stubbornly maintained his position.
Athena felt helpless in the face of his persistence.
“…about my connection with Byron,” she tried to explain.
“I don’t care,” Gabe asserted firmly.
“But I do care!” Athena’s tone turned serious. “Gabe, can’t you see that your marriage is beyond your control?”
Gabe appeared confused.
“I had no choice but to stay with Byron before. But now he’s about to get married, and I’ve left him. Do you know how many people have made fun of me? Experiencing that once was enough. I won’t allow it to happen again!”
“I won’t be like him…” Gabe rushed to reassure her.
Just then, Athena looked ahead suddenly, her brows furrowing. “Is that your car?”
Following her gaze, Gabe’s expression also turned concerned.
They walked over to find the windows of Gabe’s silver SUV smashed, and the body dented in several places.
Gabe had never encountered such a situation before.
On the other hand, Athena noticed a piece of A4 paper with red writing on the shattered windshield.
She approached with a cold expression, removing the paper.
“Miss Newton, consider this a small surprise. Enjoy your time with your boyfriend in Salin City. Don’t interfere in my affairs. Anyone who stands in the way of my profits will meet their end.”
“A death threat?” Gabe’s face darkened.
“Well, it seems I’m the target, and you’ve been dragged into it,” Athena sighed in helplessness. “I’ll cover the repairs for your car.”
“You’re the victim here; there’s no need for you to cover anything,” Gabe’s seriousness deepened. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle this.”
“It might be related to an Imbe Group project. Don’t get involved; you might become a target too. I’ll notify the company to deal with it,” Athena advised.
“Byron?” Gabe blurted out.
Athena sensed a tinge of jealousy in his tone.
“Why would Mr. Crawford care about something so trivial?” Athena responded helplessly. “Let’s call the police first.”
This was within Athena’s expectations.
The police arrived, but due to a malfunction in the road’s surveillance, there was no footage of the incident.
Gabe, who was not accustomed to such circumstances, grew angry.
The ordeal took a long time, and it was nearly four o’clock when they returned to the hotel.
During the journey, Athena rescheduled her afternoon meeting with Carlos for the following day.
Worried, Gabe escorted Athena to her room and repeatedly advised her not to open the door without caution before heading to the lobby.
He decided to change his room to one closer to Athena’s.
As soon as he left, Athena’s doorbell rang.
Assuming Gabe had something else to discuss, she opened the door with reluctance.
“Mr. Chambers, I’ve had enough of your lectures…”
Her words trailed off as she looked at the person standing before her, and her eyes widened in astonishment.
“Why have you come?”
